Top investigation organizations from about the world will convene in Washington, DC for the Knowledge Foundation?s Nuclear Power Safety 2011 conference which will take location at the Marriott Wardman Park from December 8-9, 2011.
Nuclear power is facing a number of challenges in the close to and long-term. Despite the development of new reactor designs, the possibility of a catastrophic accident has not been eliminated. In addition, the vulnerability of nuclear power plants to terrorist attacks further increases issues about nuclear power safety.Nuclear Power Safety 2011 will address a broad scope of multidisciplinary issues connected to technological advances in nuclear power safety. The understanding of such issues and their interrelationship is vital to the development of safer nuclear power. This plan will bring together an international interdisciplinary panel of specialists from government, academia, and industry to address vital concerns in nuclear power safety such as:
Lessons learned from Fukushima, Chernobyl and Three Mile Island
Identifying and overcoming vulnerabilities to terrorist attack
Safety systems ? a technology neutral assessment
New technologies – impact of novel supplies, technologies and advanced engineering on threat mitigation
Technologies failure vs. human factor vs. all-natural disaster
Safety culture and human errors
Nuclear power plant regulation: implications of a safety objectives driven efficiency-based regulation
The “Nuclear Power right after Fukushima: Issues and Possibilities” keynote address will be delivered by Dr. Gail H. Marcus. Dr. Marcus will offer an overview of how the Fukushima accident has altered nuclear power operations and development about the globe. Some of the significant safety issues raised by this incident will be identified, and probably impacts on operating plants will be explored. Particular attention will be given to identifying achievable technologies options to help address longer term nuclear power development plans. Dr. Marcus is an independent consultant on nuclear power technology and policy and previously worked as Deputy Director-Common of the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency in Paris Principal Deputy Director of the DOE Office of Nuclear Energy, Science and Technology in different positions at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and as Assistant Chief of the Science Policy Research Division at the Congressional Investigation Service. Dr. Marcus has served as President of the American Nuclear Society and as Chair of the Engineering Section of AAAS. She also served on the National Investigation Council Committee on the Future Demands of Nuclear Engineering Education. Dr. Marcus has an S.B. and S.M. in Physics, and an Sc.D. in Nuclear Engineering from MIT. She is the 1st woman to earn a doctorate in nuclear engineering in the United States.
In addition, technical presentations will be delivered by the French Atomic Power Commission as well as three US national laboratories such as Brookhaven National Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. A number of prestigious universities from around the globe and private corporations will also be represented on technical plan.
