The Emmy award-winning reality program : Edition returns to this holiday season with four special episodes, including the Bastrop County build featuring an innovative new green designed through a collaboration of designers, EFC Homes builders and a leading from The House Designers.

It?s been 15 months since Central Texas was devastated by wildfires that took two lives, destroyed more than 1,600 homes and 34,000 acres. Many stories of bravery and courage arose from this disaster including the story of Hearts of the Pines firefighter Mizzy Zdroj, who was helping to battle the blaze while her own home was being destroyed.

Approximately 3,000 volunteers, under the leadership of EFC Custom Homes and the Extreme Makeover design came together to build the Zdroj family a brand new energy efficient home in just seven days. The goal with this home was to have a lot of innovative products in it but nothing over-the-top. From a design standpoint, we wanted to create a home that had plenty of sustainable and green features so that they could easily maintain and afford it.?

The new home is approximately 2,400 square feet and was built using the latest green building techniques and products including geothermal HVAC, solar energy panels, tankless heating, low-flow toilets, ENERGY STAR

This week, brand new solar panels are glittering in the quiet neighborhood of Willowbrook, Los Angeles. The panels will generate thirty one kilowatts of locally-produced energy and save owners over three hundred thousand dollars over a twenty five year period. How much did the panels cost the owners? Living Off-Grid is Only Way to Keep Power When Storms Such as Sandy Strike

Published by fnever on November 4th, 2012 - in Knowledge Base

Nashville, Tenn. (PRWEB) November 02, 2012

Nearly 8 million homes and businesses without power. More than 85 U.S. citizens dead. Untold property damage from , and fires. That?s what occurred after Sandy wreaked its havoc earlier this week in the northeastern United States, according to CNN and other news sources.

Sandy is just the latest natural disaster to cause huge problems for people who are at the mercy of the U.S. power grid. Other storms including hurricanes and tornadoes, plus floods and fires, have also contributed to the loss of air conditioning, heating, lighting and food due to power outages.

Power4Patriots is finding that more and more people are deciding they don?t want to be dependent on an old and faulty power grid that falters so frequently and costs them hundreds or sometimes thousands of dollars when it fails. Some of those people are turning to Power4Patriots to get off the grid and generate their own solar and wind power. In fact, the company recently sold its 100,000th unit since launching less than a year ago.

In addition to being friendly, the Power4Patriots system is a 100 percent legal way to cut energy costs by as much as 75 percent while making a , cabin or RV self-sufficient. And when the power grid goes down as it did earlier this week across much of the Northeast, Power4Patriots customers don?t go dark.

Power4Patriots is a collection of videos and manuals describing how to build solar panels, , water heaters and solar heaters. The system includes six videos demonstrating how to build a solar panel, including choosing the right materials, finding the right for the system and avoiding costly mistakes, as well as two instruction manuals with step-by-step, illustrated directions. It also includes four videos detailing how to build a and two instruction manuals.

While experience in working with wood and other materials is helpful, users don?t need to be professional handymen to build these systems, and skills such as welding are not necessary. The company says that installing solar panels and a wind turbine at one?s home will cut energy costs by as much as 75 percent.

On average, the costs are under $ 200 to build a solar panel and under $ 200 to build a wind turbine. Consumers who purchase already-made solar panels and wind turbines spend three to four times that amount. The time commitment to build a solar panel ranges from two to four hours, with the first one requiring more time than subsequent panels. A wind turbine requires a handful of hours to build.

Importantly, the outside temperature doesn?t matter when it comes to benefiting from solar panels, which are energized by sunlight. Urban conditions work too because roofs, poles, fences and windowsills can be utilized.

Power4Patriots was created as a way to allow anyone to become independent of high power bills and outages. Cost-effective and uncomplicated, Power4Patriots teaches people how to build their own, environmentally friendly sources of energy. Visit Power4Patriots today to watch their controversial video that?s been viewed by millions of people all over the world.

Great Park?s ?Green Home? Completed; Student Builders Honored

Published by fnever on October 23rd, 2012 - in Knowledge Base

Anaheim, CA (PRWEB) October 21, 2012

Southern California Edison?s John Morton for years has had the dream of creating an affordable green home with all the bells and whistles?solar powered electrical as a complete energy source, gray plumbing, insulated windows, a roof and outer walls that have thermal protection and much more. When the dream became a reality, Morton, who serves on an advisory committee for North Orange County Regional Occupational Program (ROP) BITA, asked if the high school students could be involved. Program managers and instructors agreed on the spot to have the students frame the walls for the 1700 square foot home.

Students in ROP BITA programs at seven schools — Anaheim, Brea Olinda, Katella, Los Alamitos, Magnolia, Valencia and Western High Schools — built the exterior and interior wooden frames to the architect?s specifications in their construction yards, and the frames were trucked to Irvine?s Great Park .

The opportunity arose to develop a community classroom for the project, wherein students perform unpaid work alongside professionals who train them, and twelve students enrolled. Building Industry Technology Academy (BITA) students Sunny Kim and Spencer Smith from Brea Olinda High School; Destiny Delatorre and Nicholas Perez from Gilbert High School; and Andy Cruz, Angel Garcia, Astric Gonzalez, Samantha Kelley, James Montero, Valerie Morse, Chad Mullen, and Angel Zuniga from Katella High School helped to build the home this summer while earning credits for school.

Students were involved in every building process, including grading the land and pouring the foundation. They learned wiring, ducting, joining and plumbing skills, and even learned how to sink pylons into concrete. Most important, students learned to work as a with enthusiastic and willing professionals who showed them the latest methods and materials used in creating energy efficient homes. Students in the community classroom portion of the academy program are required to work eight hours a week and attend class for three hours. BITA students generally worked far more than their requirement, and in fact, liked the work so much that they begged to stay and work (still for free) after the summer school community classroom session ended. During the classroom portion, students learned new skills or reviewed skills they already learned. Instructor John Puckett taught the students soldering for plumbing skills, and Lynne MacVean and her employees from Mammoth Electric taught them how to wire three-way switches.

After a year of being showcased in its current location, the home will be cut in half and trucked to its permanent location on a Habitat for Humanity site in Santa Ana, California, where it will house a disabled veteran.

The ribbon cutting and open house event on site at Irvine?s Great Park on October 10 honored all involved in the building process. The chief executive officer of Southern California Edison, the publisher of Green Home Builder, and the Irvine mayor and City Council members all praised students for their part in the construction of the house. Karen Nelson, assistant superintendent at ROP, expressed gratitude on behalf of the program and the students for the opportunity to participate in such a rich learning experience.
