Nearly 8 million homes and businesses without power. More than 85 U.S. citizens dead. Untold property damage from wind, water and fires. That?s what occurred after Sandy wreaked its havoc earlier this week in the northeastern United States, according to CNN and other news sources.

Shipments of LCD TVs are now expected to grow at a slower pace in 2012 than 2011, according to the latest Quarterly Global TV Shipment and Forecast Report issued by NPD DisplaySearch. In addition, the overall TV market is expected to decline this year, even as segments such as emerging markets, large screen sizes, LED backlights, and 3D continue to grow.
In the latest forecast update, total TV shipments are forecast to fall 1.4% in 2012 to 245M units, while LCD TV is expected to increase by 5%?compared to 7% growth in 2011?reaching 216M units. The decline in overall TV market demand and the slower growth in LCD TV shipments can be attributed to the slower rate of price erosion and cautious spending by consumers in Europe and Asia. Average LCD TV selling prices are only expected to decline 4% in 2012 compared with 6% erosion in 2011 and 10% erosion in 2010. The growth is also slower this year as the transition to digital broadcasting, which accelerated purchases in major markets over the past few years has largely been completed. However, many emerging markets are still in the early stages of the switch to digital broadcasting.
?The worldwide demand for TVs is slower this year as economic uncertainty in many regions and a greater focus on profits by many LCD TV supply chain members will lead to softer price erosion, which in turn has a direct impact on sales,? noted Paul Gagnon, Director of North America TV Research for NPD DisplaySearch. Gagnon added, ?However, several key high value segments of the TV business, such as large screen sizes and LED-backlit LCD TVs, continue to grow.?
Growth in emerging markets like China, Asia Pacific, Latin America, Eastern Europe, as well as the Middle East, and Africa, are expected to reach 8% Y/Y in 2012, matching the pace from 2011. Growth in these regions is expected to remain in the mid-single-digit range throughout the forecast period, offsetting the lack of strong growth in countries already well along the flat panel TV conversion path.
Indeed, LCD TVs remain the only growing TV technology, as OLED TVs are likely to launch late this year, and LCD continues to take market share from both CRT and plasma technologies. LCD TVs are expected to account for about 88% of total TV shipments worldwide in 2012, up from 82% the year before, and are projected to peak around 97% of overall unit demand in 2015. Plasma TV shipments on the other hand will fall to about 5%, declining 26% Y/Y as pricing becomes uncompetitive at key sizes.
Larger screen sizes continue to increase their share as affordability improves and early adopting flat panel TV consumers re-enter the market for an upgrade. The share of TV shipments at 50? and larger screen sizes is expected to jump from 6.5% in 2011 to 7.7% in 2012 and reach 10% by 2015. This will bring the average screen size to 35? for the first time in 2012, while the average size sold in North America is expected to exceed 40? in 2013.
LED Share of LCD TV Shipments Up 25 Points Y/Y
The share of LED-backlit LCD TVs is expected to increase to 69% in 2012, compared to just 45% in 2011. The primary reason for the growth in share is the introduction of low-cost direct-LED backlight models that can be priced at a very small premium over CCFL backlit models. Direct-lit LED LCD TVs are bulkier than thin edge-lit models, but the lower cost will help move the market away from CCFL. Several governments, like China, are encouraging the purchase of these more energy efficient models.
3D TV Shipments to Grow 74% in 2012
While the outlook for 3D TV shipments has cooled somewhat, 74% Y/Y growth is still very impressive for a technology entering the third year of availability, and adoption in many regions remains robust. Both Western Europe and China are expected to have almost 30% of total TV unit shipments as 3D ready sets and after a very slow start in North America, adoption is expected to improve as the premiums fall, availability grows, and accessories like glasses decrease rapidly in cost. Even so, the growth in 3D TVs is dependent on better 3D content availability, but a broader installed base of 3D sets will encourage content producers in a virtuous cycle.

On the other hand, there are some disadvantages of solar energy which may be stated that, the solar panels may be broke or malfunctioning resulting to defects in converting the sunlight temperatures. When this happens, there will be some effects in the environment. Additionally, the production of solar energy can not be done at night or in a cloudy or rainy day and hence its effectiveness may not be good or reachable. It should be noted that even though solar energy is used by most of the developed countries, it may not be possible or efficient in countries which experience long winter periods (Solar Energy International 300).
In conclusion, despite the disadvantages of solar energies the advantages outweigh the disadvantages and hence make it the very best method of energy production. One of the largest markets for solar power is senior living communities, both those run by private companies and those managed by state or municipal agencies. For the most part, these are solar panel installations to supplement on-grid power and reduce energy and operating costs.
For communities managed by corporations or government agencies, it’s logical: the cost of running senior living communities, whether post-55 complexes or those providing assisted living or advanced care services, have small profit margins.
Along with lowering operating costs, solar energy programs instituted at senior communities often take advantage of incentives offered by federal and state agencies.
Lessons from Decades Past
Many people who buy and use solar panels and solar lighting are part over 55. To some, it may seem surprising that the “older crowd” would be so open to new technologies, even when many renewable subsidies are expiring with an unknown future given the recent debt ceiling and related financial issues in Washington, DC.
The fact is that unlike many younger members of the Green Community, these folks lived through the 1970s energy crisis and know that reliance on traditional fossil fuels will continually be more expensive and that the United States must become to be less reliant on fuel from the Middle East. This certainly does not mean that environmental concerns are not a factor.
One resident of a 12-acre, 318 unit campus in Portland, OR, that “went green” wrote to the facilities’ management to commend them “for their interest is protecting the environment.” The CherryWood Village Retirement Community in Portland installed a 92.4 kilowatt solar panel system that is estimated to reduce the facility’s main building electric bills by an estimated 25% annually. CherryWood Village is both a retirement and assisted living housing community.
Since Oregon is not a region known for its sunshine, it shows how far solar technology has come in recent years. Other regions that have or are now “Going Green” with solar include a 36-unit apartment building for moderate and low income senior citizens in Medford, NJ. In fact, the project is presently one of four national finalists for the 2011 award for “best New Senior Housing Development,” granted by Affordable Housing Finance, a national trade magazine/website serving the affordable housing development market.
The Medford, NJ, senior residence was completed in September 2010 and with full occupancy by December 2010. Along with one and two bedroom units, building amenities include a community room, a laundry room, a lounge, a computer room and a wellness room. The new construction included a major solar roof panel installation. Along with communities in Northern and Southern California, the other finalist is located in Pennsylvania.
Even so, the California and the Sunbelt is where solar power took hold years ago and these regions have the most senior residences with hybrid solar systems.
In 2010, the City of Indian Wells, CA upgraded its Indian Wells Villa senior citizen apartment complex. The 90-duplex development with a clubhouse and pool spreads across 10 acres of property was originally built in 1992. In 2010, the owners did an energy retrofit that included new roofing, high efficiency air conditioners, water heaters, and toilets. The solar installation comprised of 1,092 solar panels, 39 inverters, and a web-based, 24/7 state of the art monitoring system.
The system, combined with the other energy-savings measures, is expected to reduce the low-income tenants’ annual electric bill by 80-90%. The .2 million project was funded by the City of Indian Wells Redevelopment Agency, coupled with .8 million from Southern California Edison through Multi-Family Affordable Solar Housing (MASH) incentives and grants. It was designed and installed by Solar Distributors, Inc. of Palm Desert, CA.
As a retailer of solar lighting, one of the author’s first large sale involved a residential community in Florida that was an “over 55″ condominium complex. When they wanted to replace 72 lamp posts, they told me they looked at solar for two reasons: reducing operating costs and environmental impacts; incentives were not available and were therefore not part of the decision making process.
Advocacy Plays a Role
As energy costs rise and both managers and residents of senior complexes become more conscious of energy costs, more solar development seems inevitable. And, website and publications for these communities are a key part of the effort.
For example, USSeniorCitizen.com, “U.S. Senior Citizen Resources for America’s Senior Citizens” continually educate their audience on the benefits of renewable energy. TheAmerican Association for Retired People also actively supports renewable energy through its online resources and magazine.
These and other sites and publications regularly publishes bulletins on the latest in incentive changes and other ways to save energy and articles on off-grid homes, “My Generation: Going Green,” “SolarCity Sees Bright Future for Residential Solar Systems,” and “Which US States Lead in Clean Energy.”
It’s still unclear what the future holds in terms of incentives for renewable energies, a topic deserving of its own article after the dust in Washington, DC settles and details of where spending cuts will occur.
Which means that regardless of your age, it’s a great time to make your voice heard: if renewable energy is an area you want the government to invest in, particularly rather than subsidies to traditional energy sources such as oil companies, now is the time to make your voice heard.
Seniors Are Often Active Advocates
Being an active advocate is easier than you think: phone, write or email your senators and congressional representative. True, the lobbyists spend the money, but ultimately its the voters who make the decision in the ballot box.
And one thing younger generations can learn from senior citizens is how to make their voices heard, a key reason Florida is a “battleground election state.” Senior citizens know very well how to make their interests, and the fact that they vote, known very well to politicians.

There are more than one type of solar panel, but nearly all work by the same fundamental physics, and the very large majority of commercially available panels are made from silicon (Si). I will discuss this type here. When silicon absorbs sunlight of a certain wavelength (shorter than ~1100 nm), an electron is excited into a state which is delocalized. In other words, this electron is now free to move around the entire panel with very little barrier. However, in a piece of plain old Si, there is no reason for it to go one direction rather than another (and electricity is the net movement of electrons in a single direction). In fact, the electron will move around in the Si randomly, and then eventually this electron will simply return to the ground, or unexcited, state and release heat (just like any black object does in the hot sun). However, in the solar panel, there is something called a junction, where two slightly different materials meet. The two materials are actually both made of Si, but each one is doped (has a tiny percentage of other atoms mixed in) with a different element. The type of doping (the two types are called n- and p-type) of the Si determines its electrical properties. When an electron reaches this junction, it is either accelerated across it, or repelled by it, depending on which direction it is coming from (imagine water and a hill… water accelerates down the hill, but can’t go up it). Now there is directionality to the system.
